What is Summer's End Smokeout?

Summer's End Smokeout — known as SESO to the regulars — is the Upper Peninsula's most beloved boutique music and arts festival, returning to Boulder Alley Disc Golf Course on M-95 Highway in Republic, Michigan for four days from August 6–9, 2026. Three stages, live art, workshops, food vendors, and a fully integrated camping village stitch together a deliberately small festival experience built around the kind of multi-genre Friday-to-Sunday programming that has all but vanished from the modern festival circuit.

The lineup spans jam, bluegrass, hip-hop, EDM, folk, country, and funk — a genuinely broad spread that mirrors the kind of mixtape a long weekend in the U.P. deserves. Local Michigan bands share stages with touring jam acts, regional rappers, and underground DJs, all programmed to flow rather than compete. The 21+ age policy keeps the crowd dialed in, the camping-first format means everyone is in it for the full four days, and the boutique 3,000-person scale means you can wander between stages, art workshops, and the disc golf course without ever feeling lost or rushed.

What makes SESO special is the wilderness setting. Republic, Michigan sits in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, three hours from Marquette and a world away from anywhere else. Stars come out in numbers you only see when you're actually deep in the woods, the August night air drops into the 40s, and the festival lights up against a backdrop of forest and stars. This is the antidote to mega-festival fatigue — small, deliberate, and genuinely communal.

Artists & Performers

We only publish a lineup once we have checked it against the festival's own announcement, so this one is not listed here yet. The current bill is on the official Summer's End Smokeout site.

Travel & Planning Guide

Getting to Summer's End Smokeout 2026 in Republic, Michigan requires a real commitment — and that's part of the charm. Republic sits in Marquette County in the Upper Peninsula, roughly 3 hours northwest of Sault Ste. Marie and 5 hours north of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Most attendees fly into Sawyer International Airport (MQT) in Marquette, about 45 minutes east of the festival, or drive in from Wisconsin, Michigan's Lower Peninsula, or Minnesota. There is no shuttle service — you need a car.

Camping is included with the 4-Day pass and is the only reasonable way to do this festival. Boulder Alley Disc Golf Course transforms into a full festival campground with tent and RV sections, communal fire areas, shower facilities, and dedicated quiet zones for sleeping. RV upgrades and car-camping passes are available for an extra fee. If you really need a hotel, the small handful of options in nearby Negaunee and Ishpeming are 30–45 minutes away and book up early.

Pro tip for first-timers: pack like you're going camping in the woods, because you are. August nights in the U.P. can drop into the 40s, so bring a real sleeping bag and a warm layer for after sunset. Stock food and water before you arrive — there are vendors on-site but driving out for supplies eats a half-day. Bring cash for vendors and small purchases; cell service is spotty enough that card readers can fail. And bring bug spray — Upper Peninsula mosquitoes and black flies in August will find you.

What to Know Before You Go

⛺
Camping Is the Festival

SESO is a camping-first festival — you cannot really do this event without staying on-site. The 4-Day pass includes a tent spot, communal showers, fire rings, and access to the festival campground for the full weekend. Bring a real tent, sleeping bag rated for 40°F nights, a sleeping pad, a camp chair, and a cooler. Pack like you're going on a 4-day backpacking trip rather than a 1-day day-trip.

🌡️
U.P. Weather Is Unpredictable

Upper Peninsula in early August can deliver 80°F afternoons and 45°F nights in the same 12 hours. Bring layers — a hoodie, a real jacket for after midnight, and shorts plus light shirts for daytime. Rain is always a possibility; pack a tarp for over your tent and waterproof shoes. The campground floor drains poorly during heavy storms, so pitch on slightly elevated ground.

🚗
You Need a Car

There is no shuttle to Republic, no Uber service in the U.P. wilderness, and no public transit within hours. Fly into Marquette (MQT) and rent a car, or drive in from your home state. A car also lets you make a Walmart or supermarket run in nearby Negaunee for ice, water, and supplies before locking in at the campground. Plan for a full tank when you arrive — gas stations are sparse.

💵
Bring Cash

Cell service in Republic is patchy enough that card readers fail regularly during peak hours. Bring cash in small bills for vendor purchases, tipping camp neighbors who help out, and emergency runs into town. ATMs on-site exist but charge brutal fees and run out of cash by Saturday. Plan ahead and hit your bank before you leave home.

🦟
Bug Spray Is Mandatory

Upper Peninsula mosquitoes, black flies, and gnats in August are legendary. DEET-based repellent works best; permethrin-treated clothing is the next level for serious wilderness campers. Bring a small mosquito coil or citronella for your campsite at night. Sleeping with the tent zipped is non-negotiable. After-bite cream is worth packing for the inevitable hits.

🥘
Stock Your Cooler

On-site food vendors exist but lines build during headline sets and prices add up over four days. Bring a cooler with breakfast staples, sandwich fixings, snacks, and plenty of water. A small camp stove or grill lets you make real meals at your tent. Save vendor purchases for one or two splurge meals per day — the food at SESO is good but $15 burgers four days running gets old fast.
