What does EDC stand for?
EDC is Electric Daisy Carnival, the electronic music festival run by Insomniac: several days of DJs on multiple stages, with full-size carnival rides, art and performers built into the grounds. The flagship runs at night at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway every May, with editions in Orlando, Mexico City, and further afield. It is the biggest name in American dance music festivals, and if a friend says “EDC” with no other words, they mean this.
This guide is for anyone who’s heard the name and wants the plain version before buying a ticket: what the letters mean, where and when each edition happens, what a night there is like, whether it counts as a rave, the short version of EDC Orlando, and what to wear.
By Robert ยท Updated September 2026 ยท Dates, hours, and age rules read on the official EDC sites on 17 September 2026
Electric Daisy Carnival. Not an acronym for anything else in this context; the “everyday carry” EDC you will also find on Google is about pocket knives and flashlights, and has nothing to do with the festival. The “carnival” is literal: the grounds have rides.
Insomniac, the company behind it, describes EDC as “more than an electronic music festival – it is an unparalleled multi-sensory experience”. Strip the marketing, and it means this: the music runs across several stages at once, the stages are built as sets rather than platforms, and between them there are Ferris wheels, art cars that drive through the crowd, and performers working the paths. You do not stand in front of one stage all night; you walk a small city.

Two of these matter most to readers in the United States. EDC Las Vegas is the flagship: three nights at the Motor Speedway, held there since 2011, and from 2027, two separate weekends, each with its own three-day pass and its own camping. EDC Orlando is the East Coast edition, in November at Tinker Field, and the first one coming up. The others in one line each: Mexico City fills the Autรณdromo Hermanos Rodrรญguez for three days in February; Korea and Colombia are two-day editions in October; Thailand runs three days in December in Phuket; and EDSea is the cruise version, six days out of Miami in January. Dates on this page were read on 17 September 2026; the official site for each edition is the final word, and the links above go to our own planning pages for the two American editions.
What is EDC like?
In Las Vegas, EDC happens at night. The gates open in the evening, the opening ceremony is at 5 PM on Fridays, and the full grounds run from 7 PM to 5:30 AM. You arrive in the dark, you leave in daylight, and the whole festival is lit: nine stages, each built as its own world, with roaming art cars playing their own sets between them. The carnival part is real, with rides and Ferris wheels you can queue for at 3 AM with the main stage in the background.
A night there has a shape. The early hours are for walking: finding the stages, riding something, eating before the crowds settle. The headliners land late, the biggest crowds gather after midnight, and the last hour before the gates close at 5:30 is the strangest and, for many people, the best, with the sun coming up over a speedway full of people who have been dancing for ten hours. Then the shuttle back to the Strip, in daylight, past people going to breakfast.

Las Vegas is also the one with camping. Camp EDC sits next to the Speedway, and in 2027 it is sold per weekend, so a Dusk camper and a Dawn camper are buying different weeks. The rest of the crowd stays on the Strip and rides shuttles out each evening; the official site runs the shuttle and parking pages, and both are worth reading before you book a hotel, because the Speedway is a long way from the Strip.
EDC Orlando runs on a different clock: 1 PM to midnight each day, so you get the afternoon sets in the Florida sun and the headliners after dark. It is smaller than Las Vegas, and it is not a camping festival; people stay in town and come in each day, by car, by shuttle, or by the Brightline train that the official travel guide lists alongside them.
Whichever edition, the shape of the night is the same as any rave, only bigger. Early sets warm the stages, the crowd fills in, the headliners land late, and the music does not stop between them. The differences are scale, production, and the fact that you will walk a long way between stages. Comfortable shoes are not a suggestion.
Where EDC came from
The first Electric Daisy Carnival was a party in Chino, California, in 1991, put on by promoter Stephen Hauptfuhr for a few thousand people. Insomniac and its founder, Pasquale Rotella, took the name and ran their first EDC in 1997 at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, and it grew there through the 2000s until the move to Las Vegas.
In 2011, EDC moved from Los Angeles to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where it has been every year since, and that same year Insomniac launched EDC Orlando. Mexico City followed in 2014, then editions in China, Korea, Thailand, and, in 2026, Colombia. Most people mean the Las Vegas festival; 2027 is its first year as a two-weekend event.
Is EDC a rave?
Yes, in the way a stadium show is a concert. A rave is a dance party built around DJs playing long sets late into the night, and EDC is that at its largest: licensed, ticketed, with security, medical staff, and a schedule, but the same music, the same hours, and the same crowd that trades kandi and looks after each other. The unwritten rules are the same too: give people room, help someone who looks unwell, and expect strangers to talk to you. If the word is new to you, what a rave actually is covers the culture, the etiquette, and what to bring, and all of it applies here.
EDC Orlando, the short version
- Where
- Tinker Field, 287 S Tampa Ave, Orlando, Florida.
- When
- Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026.
- Hours
- 1 PM to midnight each day.
- Ages
- 18 and over to enter, 21 and over for alcohol and the VIP passes, with photo ID.
- Passes
- three-day and single-day tickets, unlike Las Vegas, where only the three-day pass is sold.
Orlando is the easier first EDC. It is a day-into-night event rather than an all-night one; the grounds are smaller, and you sleep in a hotel. Tickets were on sale on the official site when this was written, in three-day and single-day forms, with the VIP passes limited to 21 and over. Lineup, tickets, and travel details are on our EDC Orlando 2026 page, which we update as Insomniac announces them; the official site has the ticket page and the guide, including the prohibited-items list and the totem rules, which are worth a read before you build anything to carry.
For Las Vegas, the EDC Las Vegas guide covers the planning, and the festival page carries the lineup. If you are choosing between festivals rather than between EDCs, 15 legendary rave festivals puts EDC next to the others.
Before you buy a ticket
Three things from the official sites that catch people out. Tickets are sold through Insomniac’s own pages for each edition and are limited to four per person in Las Vegas. A ticket is tied to the person who bought it and isn’t transferable, so buy your own, and buy the VIP pass only if everyone in your group is 21 or over, because nobody under 21 gets in on one. And read the hours before you plan the rest of the trip: a Las Vegas night starts at 7 PM and ends at 5:30 AM, which means the hotel is for sleeping through the afternoon, not the evening.
What to wear to EDC
Las Vegas is a night festival in the desert in May: warm when the gates open, cold by 3 AM, and a long walk between stages. The outfit is a printed jersey over a plain tee, shorts or joggers, sneakers you have already broken in, and a hoodie you carry in until you need it. Orlando in November flips the order: afternoon heat first, so start with the tee and shorts, then put on the jersey when the sun goes down.
