What is Breakaway NorCal?

Breakaway NorCal is the Breakaway Festival brand's Northern California debut, landing at the Cal Expo Racetrack Grandstand in Sacramento on October 16–17, 2026 for two days of stadium-scale EDM, house, and bass. After years of building the Breakaway brand across the Midwest, South, and Northeast, the NorCal edition gives the Bay Area, Sacramento, Reno, and Northern California EDM community its first dedicated Breakaway weekend. Powered by Celsius, the 2026 edition is the most ambitious Breakaway debut in any new market to date.

The 2026 edition runs on the Breakaway formula, spanning festival-radio EDM, melodic future bass, and indie-electronic crossover. The booking team is known for landing acts at exactly the right inflection point in their careers. Breakaway NorCal is consistently one of the festival circuit's most accessible entry points to U.S. EDM festival culture.

Cal Expo is Sacramento's premier event venue — a state fairgrounds with the Racetrack Grandstand serving as the festival's mainstage anchor. The expansive grounds support multiple stages, dedicated VIP zones, expansive parking, and the kind of California fairgrounds infrastructure that supports a 25,000-person festival without breaking. The Bay Area, Sacramento, and Reno EDM communities show up in force every October, making the crowd one of the most enthusiastic in Northern California.

Travel & Planning Guide

Getting to Breakaway NorCal 2026 at Cal Expo is the easiest large-festival commute in Sacramento. The fairgrounds sit in central Sacramento on Exposition Boulevard, about 5 minutes from downtown via I-80 and 10 minutes from Sacramento International Airport (SMF). Most attendees drive in from the Bay Area (90 minutes), Sacramento, Reno (2 hours), Stockton, or Modesto. SMF is the primary fly-in option, with Oakland (OAK, 90 minutes) and SFO (2 hours) as alternatives. The downtown Sacramento light rail Gold Line stops at Cal Expo Station — direct festival access by transit.

There is no camping at Breakaway NorCal — this is an urban fairgrounds festival. The most convenient stays are downtown Sacramento hotels (Hyatt Regency, Citizen Hotel, Sheraton Grand) within a 10-minute Uber of the venue. The Cal Expo area itself has nearby Hilton Garden Inn and Holiday Inn Express options for those who want to walk to the festival. Many Bay Area attendees drive in for the day and head home after closing sets.

Pro tip for first-timers: take Sacramento's Gold Line light rail. The Cal Expo Station stops directly at the venue, $2.50 each way, and runs until late evening. Skip rideshare during peak entry (4-6 PM) when surge pricing destroys the math. Pre-purchase parking through the official site if you drive. Eat real Sacramento food before doors open — Allora, Localis, The Kitchen, and Sacramento's farm-to-fork scene are all within rideshare. Bring sunscreen for daytime, a hoodie for after sundown.

What to Know Before You Go

🎫
Lock In Tickets Early

Breakaway NorCal tier pricing climbs every couple of weeks once tickets go on sale. Tier 1 2-Day GA opens around $159 and the late tier hits $200+ before fees. GA+ at $229 includes faster entry lanes and elevated viewing decks. VIP at $359 adds dedicated bars, lounges, and premium amenities. Cabanas are a splurge but include private bars and 6-person seated areas. As the NorCal debut, expect high demand.

🚆
Take the Gold Line

Sacramento's Gold Line light rail stops directly at Cal Expo Station — $2.50 each way beats every other transportation option. Skip the parking lottery entirely. The Gold Line runs from downtown Sacramento and works perfectly with a downtown hotel stay. Pre-purchase parking is available through the official site if you drive, but the train is cleaner.

🌡️
Sacramento October Weather

Sacramento in mid-October swings between 75°F sunny afternoons and 55°F nights. Sunscreen for daytime sets — California Central Valley sun is intense. Bring a hoodie for after sundown. Pop-up rain is rare but possible. The Cal Expo grounds are mostly pavement and grass — comfortable closed-toe sneakers handle both surfaces.

🏨
Downtown Sacramento Hotels

Stay downtown (Hyatt Regency, Citizen Hotel, Sheraton Grand) for the best food, post-festival nightlife, and Gold Line access. Cal Expo-area hotels (Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn Express) are walking distance from the venue if you want to skip the train entirely. Avoid airport hotels unless you have a Sunday morning flight — they're isolated from the city.

👗
Breakaway Fashion

Breakaway leans pop-EDM with kandi, rave gear, mesh, bodysuits, biker shorts, and reflective accessories all standard. Comfortable closed-toe sneakers for fairgrounds pavement. A clear bag is required for entry per festival policy. Bring a hoodie for after 9 PM when Sacramento October evenings cool off, and a portable battery for the cell-service crunch.

🍽️
Eat Sacramento Food

Sacramento is the farm-to-fork capital of America — eat well before the festival. Make Friday-night dinner reservations at Localis, Allora, or The Kitchen before festival weekend fills the books. The Tower District and Midtown offer dozens of solid spots. Skip the venue food vendors for actual Sacramento restaurants when you can — the city's food scene is genuinely underrated.
