Nocturnal Wonderland is the longest-running electronic music festival in North America and the founding event of Insomniac — the company that now produces EDC, Escape, and Beyond Wonderland. First held in 1995 as a warehouse party, Nocturnal has grown into a two-day, 65,000+ capacity destination festival at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino. This is where American rave culture was born, and the festival retains a uniquely OG energy that sets it apart from Insomniac's newer properties.
Five stages anchor the festival: the Labyrinth (mainstage), Wolves Den (bass and hardstyle), Sunken Garden (trance and progressive), Queen's Grounds (house and techno), and the Forest (underground). The cryptic Alice in Wonderland theme runs through stage design, performers, art installations, and a massive animatronic spider centerpiece that has become iconic. Pasquale Rotella personally curates headliners who bridge the old-school trance and hardstyle community with next-generation Insomniac signings.
Nocturnal is famously the Insomniac festival where OG ravers feel most at home. Expect trance anthems, hardstyle throwbacks, an older-skewing crowd than Hard Summer, and a culture of PLUR kandi trades and sunrise hugs. Camping at Glen Helen is available and strongly recommended — post-fest afterparties at the campground often outlast the main festival programming. This is rave history, still being written.
