What Is a Sublimated Jersey?
Meaning & how to spot one.

The print is part of the fabric. For ravers who saw "sublimated" on a listing, that's what it means.

01 / THE SHORT ANSWER

What is a sublimated jersey? The meaning in plain words

A sublimated jersey is a polyester jersey whose design is dyed into the fabric with heat. The colors, the art, and often the names and numbers aren’t a layer of ink or vinyl on top, and they aren’t sewn on. They’re part of the fabric itself.

Every Rave Bonfire jersey is printed this way, like the ones in our rave jerseys collection.

02 / THE WORD

What does “sublimated” mean in clothing?

The word comes from chemistry. Sublimation is when a solid turns straight into a gas without melting first, like dry ice turning into carbon dioxide gas. Printers borrowed the name because heat turns the printed ink into a gas, and the hot polyester takes it in.

You’ll also see it called dye-sub or dye-sublimated. When the whole jersey is printed, it’s often sold as “all-over print”: our baseball listings use that phrase, and our sublimated hockey jerseys say “all-over sublimation”.

03 / HOW IT’S MADE

How is a sublimated jersey made?

A fully printed jersey usually goes through these steps:

  1. The design is set up as a digital file.
  2. It’s printed as a mirror image onto special transfer paper with sublimation inks.
  3. The paper goes face down on white polyester in a heat press. The ink turns into a gas, moves into the fibers, and sets as the fabric cools.
  4. The printed fabric is cut into panels.
  5. The front, back, sleeves, and collar are sewn together.

Trade guides recommend pressing at roughly 380 to 400ยฐF (about 195 to 205ยฐC) for under a minute. The usual route for sports jerseys is to print the fabric flat, then sew it. The other route presses the design onto a jersey that’s already sewn.

04 / FULLY SUBLIMATED

What does “fully sublimated” mean?

Fully sublimated, or all-over, means printing edge to edge: full-color art, smooth fades, and photo-style images across the whole jersey, including names and numbers. Partial or spot sublimation prints just one area, like a chest graphic on a plain jersey.

Because it’s a digital print, there’s no screen (the mesh stencil used in screen printing) to make for each color. Each jersey in an order can carry its own name and number, and we can print a single jersey by itself. That’s why we have no minimum order. This guide covers the print. For a stitched crest on top, see our sublimation vs embroidery guide.

05 / HOW TO SPOT ONE

How can you tell if a jersey is sublimated?

Two quick checks, then what our photos show.

  1. Touch it. Run a finger across the design. On a polyester jersey, if it feels just like the rest of the fabric, with no edge and no layer, it’s almost certainly sublimated. A smooth, slightly raised or shiny layer usually means screen print or vinyl. A raised fabric piece with a stitched border is usually tackle twill.
  2. Turn it inside out. Sewn twill numbers and embroidery show stitching on the inside. A sublimated design has no stitching behind it, and the inside is usually paler than the front.
  3. Look at the label and the seams. On the crew jersey in our photos, the brand and size are printed into the fabric instead of on a sewn-in tag, and the galaxy print runs right up to the sleeve seams. That shows the whole jersey was printed. The first two checks tell you if it’s sublimated.

06 / BLACK DESIGNS

Can a sublimated jersey be black?

Yes. Sublimation dye is see-through, and there’s no white sublimation ink, so jerseys are printed on white or very light polyester. A black jersey gets its black from the print, laid across every panel, and any white in a design is the fabric showing through.

A deep snag, or a seam that’s pulled hard, can expose a tiny spot of the white base fabric. It’s easiest to see on solid dark colors.

07 / REPLICA OR NOT

Is a sublimated jersey a replica?

Not necessarily. “Sublimated” describes how the design got into the fabric. “Replica” is a sports-store word for the licensed fan version of a team’s official jersey. One jersey can be both: official minor-league team stores, for example, sell jerseys titled “Sublimated Home Replica Jersey”.

Ours aren’t official team or artist merch. They’re custom and fan-inspired, made to order.

08 / AT A RAVE

Are sublimated jerseys good for raves?

Yes, they suit a long night on your feet. Because the print isn’t a coating, you still get most of the fabric’s softness and stretch. Polyester holds this kind of dye tightly, so sweat generally doesn’t make the print run or fade. A 2021 lab study also found that the printed design itself made no difference to airflow in polyester, though the heat press did change how airy knitted fabrics were.

Best of all, every jersey can be different. A crew can share one design with each person’s own name, alias, or number, all printed in the same run. For one jersey or a few, start a custom sublimated jersey and see the full mockup before you pay. Crew orders of 10 or more get a group quote. For ideas, see our matching crew looks.

After the set, don’t leave a sweaty jersey balled up in your bag, where polyester can start to smell. Air it out and wash it soon.

Sublimated jerseys: questions and answers

What are the downsides of sublimation?

It needs polyester: plain cotton won’t hold the dye, and the less polyester in the fabric, the duller the colors. There’s no white ink, so any white comes from the fabric. On solid dark designs, a snag can show a tiny white spot. Like any dyed fabric, it can fade with high heat or long hours in strong sun.

How long does a sublimated jersey last?

The dye sits inside the fibers, so there’s no surface layer to crack or peel. In lab tests, sublimation-printed polyester held its color well through washing and rubbing. The main things that fade it are high heat and strong sun. So wash it cold, skip the iron and the hot dryer, and don’t leave it drying in direct sunlight. Here’s the full care routine.

How much does a sublimated jersey cost?

It depends on the style and extras like embroidery, which we quote before you pay. You see a free mockup first and pay only once you approve it. There’s no minimum order, and 10 or more pieces get a group quote.

Which is better, sublimation or embroidery?

Neither wins everywhere. Sublimation suits busy, full-color art across the whole jersey. Embroidery suits a single raised crest or logo. One jersey can also use both methods. See how sublimation and embroidery compare.

What fabric are sublimated jerseys made of?

Polyester, or mostly polyester fabric: smooth knits, breathable mesh, and stretchy polyester-spandex blends. Standard sublimation doesn’t work on plain cotton. The dye bonds with polyester, and cotton fibers won’t hold it. Our baseball, hockey, basketball, hooded, reversible, and crop jerseys are all 100% polyester.
