Who is Zeds Dead?

The Canadian duo who built a bass empire from a Toronto basement.

Zeds Dead are Dylan Mamid (DC) and Zachary Rapp-Rovan (Hooks), a Canadian duo from Toronto. The two met in 2004 over a shared love of hip-hop and production, relaunching under the Zeds Dead name in 2009 — a nod to a line from Pulp Fiction.

From the start they defied categorisation. Their viral 2009 rework of Blue Foundation’s “Eyes on Fire” marked them as pioneers of the evolving dubstep and bass scene, and EPs like Somewhere Else (2014) — home to “Collapse,” “Hadouken” and “Lost You” — built a devoted following. Their 2016 debut album Northern Lights reached the Billboard dance top ten.

They co-founded the Deadbeats label in 2016, now one of independent dance music’s most respected imprints, and their annual Deadrocks event at Red Rocks has become a bass-music pilgrimage. Explore more electronic music artists in the full DJ directory, or visit their official site.

There are no real short cuts — you have to love it, and that keeps you making music and improving.
