How do you style a hockey jersey?
How to style a hockey jersey starts with fit and layers. Wear it loose over a fitted layer, then balance the jersey with skinny jeans or shorts, or lean into it with wide pants. Choose the under-layer for the room: a tank or nothing on a hot dance floor, long sleeves or a hoodie for a cold line outside.
Under NHL rules, players wear their pads under the uniform, so a player’s jersey has to be big enough to cover shoulder and elbow pads. Since you won’t wear pads, a replica’s extra room is yours. Ours fit like a normal top, so order your usual size.
Key takeaways
- Fitted under, loose on top.
- A tank for hot rooms, a hoodie for cold lines.
- Let the jersey be the only loud print.
What should you wear under a hockey jersey?
In a packed, hot room, go light with a tank or nothing. Wear a plain tee during the day, and a fitted long-sleeve or hoodie when the line outside is cold. Nike’s hockey-game guide agrees: “A long-sleeved top worn underneath will add extra protection from cool drafts.”
Keep that layer fitted. Some fan replicas even leave room for one: the San Jose Sharks’ team store lists its Fanatics replica jersey as an oversized fit, intended for layering with a sweatshirt.

How do you wear a hockey jersey to a rave?
Make the jersey the loud piece and keep the rest simple. Wear it loose, with a tank or nothing under it.
Add bike shorts, cargo shorts, or joggers, and sneakers you can stand in all night.
Our rave hockey jerseys collection has close to 200 designs, all made to order in 100% polyester. The sublimated print is in the fabric, so there’s no stiff layer on top (more in what a sublimated jersey is).

How do you style a hockey jersey for a cold winter show?
Build your hockey jersey outfit in layers. Patagonia’s layering guide pairs a sweat-wicking base layer with a heat-trapping midlayer and a shell against the weather. Wear a fitted long-sleeve or hoodie under the jersey, then a jacket or rave cloak over it for the line, with joggers, boots, and a warm hat.
Plan for the walk out, too. Sweat-soaked fabric can chill you once you stop moving. At Decadence Colorado (Dec 30–31, 2026, Colorado Convention Center, Denver), the event’s info page says re-entry isn’t permitted, and the coat check is in the lobby. Denver’s normal low on those nights is 18°F, so check the coat and keep the jersey on. More in our winter rave outfits for cold nights guide.

How do women and guys style a hockey jersey?
Our hockey jerseys are unisex, so one design works both ways.
For women: as a dress, belted, or over leggings or bike shorts
Belt it as a short dress with knee boots, or wear it loose over leggings or bike shorts. On a dark night, try the Black Red Gothic design over black tights. For the dress look, check the length on our size guide first.
For guys: over a hoodie, with cargos or joggers
Pull it over a plain hoodie, hood out, with cargos or joggers and high-tops. Our Rusko design suits this look (fan-inspired, not official merch).
Can you wear a hockey jersey casually?
Yes. For a streetwear look, wear it over a plain tee with straight jeans or cargos and clean sneakers. Pick a quieter design, like the Forest Green Vintage. Treat the print’s colors as team colors: match your sneakers to one, or go neutral black and white, as Nike suggests for game day. Our guide on how to style a baseball jersey follows the same logic.

How do you get a custom hockey jersey with your name and number?
Copy the pro layout. Under NHL rules, the surname runs across the back at shoulder height, and the number on the back is at least 10 inches high. Use your own name, or borrow one from our rave names for the back of your jersey.
Tell us the name, number, and look you want. You’ll get a free full mockup within 24–48 hours and unlimited revisions, and you don’t pay until you approve it. Names and numbers can be printed, embroidered (extra cost, quoted before you pay), or done in tackle twill.
Going as a crew? Many of our festival crews order 10–50 matching jerseys. There’s no minimum. Under 10 pieces, start at custom jerseys; 10 or more get a bulk crew quote. More in matching jerseys for your whole crew.
How to style a hockey jersey: questions and answers
Are hockey jerseys supposed to be oversized?
Pro and replica jerseys are cut roomy, not huge, because a player’s jersey has to cover the pads. Ours fit like a normal top, so order your usual size.
Can you wear a hockey jersey in the summer?
Yes. Wear it loose over shorts and skip extra layers underneath. In hot weather, the CDC advises loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing, so pick a light-colored design.
Do you wear a shirt under a hockey jersey?
You don’t have to. Bare skin, a tank, or a tee all work; save the long-sleeve or hoodie for the cold.
What sizes do your hockey jerseys come in?
Most of our hockey designs come in XS–4XL, with 5XL on request, and a few, like the GRiZ design, list XS–5XL. All are unisex and made to order.
Can I put my name and number on a hockey jersey?
Yes. Send us the name, number, and idea, and you’ll see a free full mockup within 24–48 hours, before you pay. We print them, embroider them at extra cost, or do them in tackle twill.
Pick your jersey.
Then match the layer to the night.
Start with the design you’d wear most, then pick your layer from the table above. For the rest of the outfit, see what to wear to a music festival. Want your name on the back? Send us your idea. Tell us your festival date and we’ll confirm the realistic delivery window.
