01 / THE SHORT ANSWER

What do people wear to raves? The five-piece formula

Start with a jersey or crop top, bottoms you can move in, worn-in closed-toe shoes, a layer for the weather and a small bag that meets your event’s rules. A hockey jersey with shorts, an open baseball jersey over a tank, or a cropped jersey with cargos can all be a starting point. Choose the amount of coverage you prefer.

The gallery pairs Rave Bonfire jerseys with everyday festival staples. It includes shorts, fishnets, skorts, cycling shorts and loose trousers, with a size range and product link for each jersey. Use the 15 outfit ideas to choose a starting point, then check the weather and your event’s rules.

By Julian ยท Updated 10 September 2026 ยท Jersey sizes checked 10 September 2026. Check your event’s current rules before packing.

A rave outfit is clothing built for dancing in a crowd for most of a night: stretchy or loose pieces that move with you, a print or color you would not wear to work, shoes that survive hours of standing, one layer for the cold part of the night, and a bag small enough to keep on you. The rest is taste, and the formula below is the same whether it is your first rave or your fortieth.

01

Top: something that stays put

Raise your arms, sit down and move around in the top before you pack it. Hockey jerseys give you a loose, long-sleeved option; baseball jerseys can be worn open over a tank or crop. A cropped jersey works with high-waisted shorts or trousers.

02

Bottoms: room to move

Shorts, a skort, cycling shorts or loose cargo pants all work with a printed jersey. Try sitting, bending and walking in your chosen pair. Pick the length and fit that feel comfortable to you, then add fishnets if you like the look.

03

Shoes: closed-toe, already worn in

Sneakers, platform sneakers, or boots you have walked in for at least a week. New shoes are the mistake every first-rave thread warns about, because it is the one people keep making. Heels are not worth it; the floor is crowded, sticky, or grass.

04

Layer: one warm piece you can carry

Indoor rooms get hot, outdoor stages get cold after midnight, and you will do both in one night. A cropped hoodie ties around the waist. A hooded rave cloak is warmer, comes off in one move, and folds over your arm.

05

Bag: small, and within the venue’s size rule

A fanny pack or a small crossbody. The size limits are real, and they differ by event; the exact numbers are in the rules section.

Add extras if you want them: kandi, sunglasses for daytime, earplugs, a bandana, a pashmina or a folding fan. Keep the bag comfortable and check which accessories your event allows.

02 / FIFTEEN LOOKS

Rave outfit ideas for women: jerseys, crop tops and layers

Start with the jersey you love, then choose the shorts, skort or trousers you feel good wearing. These fifteen ideas mix hockey jerseys, baseball jerseys and cropped tops with simple festival staples.

03 / BY EVENT

What to wear to a rave party, a festival, a camping weekend or a winter rave

Your setting changes the balance between coverage, ventilation and the layers you carry. Start with the outfit, then adapt it to the forecast and the venue.

An indoor rave party, club or warehouse

Hot, packed, no sun. This is where the bodysuit or cropped jersey with shorts or joggers is enough on its own. The layer is for the way home, so pick one that ties around your waist (like a cropped hoodie) or check it at the coat check if the venue has one. Bag: as small as you can manage. Shoes: something you do not mind getting sticky.

An outdoor festival, day into night

Temperatures can change across an outdoor event. A jersey with shorts or trousers gives you a base; carry an extra layer suited to the forecast. Sunglasses for the day, and a bandana if the ground is dusty. Insomniac festivals (EDC Las Vegas, Beyond Wonderland, Escape) are rain or shine, and they tell you to plan your clothes accordingly; Freaky Deaky’s own safety page says to check the forecast and bring an extra layer for when it gets chilly. Our festival guides for EDC Las Vegas, EDC Orlando, Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge, Tomorrowland, Bass Canyon and Lost Lands have the dates, and the EDC Las Vegas guide goes deeper on that one.

A camping festival

Two of everything, because you will not have a washing machine and one set will be wet or dusty by day two. Joggers earn their place here: mornings at a campsite are cold, and you will sit on the ground between sets. A cloak doubles as a blanket at the tent. See our pages for Electric Forest, Lightning in a Bottle and Suwannee Hulaween.

A winter rave or an indoor arena show

Plan for both the queue outside and the room inside. Wear a warm outer layer suited to the forecast, and check whether the venue has a coat check. The hockey jersey with cargo pants in look 13 offers more coverage; the open baseball jersey and tank in look 14 give you a removable layer. A jersey alone is not a winter coat.

A Halloween rave

Halloween is the one weekend when the outfit and the costume are the same thing. The events also have stricter rules on masks and props, so read them before you buy a mask. Our Halloween raves guide has the 2026 events, the rules, and the cloaks.

Going as a pair or a group? The couples’ rave outfit guide and the guys’ rave outfit guide use the same formula from the other side.

04 / COMFORT

Comfortable rave outfits: fabric, shoes, the bag, and the layer

The threads about bad first raves keep naming the same four things: the wrong shoes, no layer, a bag refused at the gate, and clothes that needed adjusting all night.

Fabric

Check how the fabric feels when you move and whether the seams, waistband or straps rub. Lightweight shorts or loose trousers may feel better in heat; a warmer layer matters when temperatures drop. Denim shorts appear in look 11 as a styling option; choose a pair you have already tested for comfort. Follow the care instructions on each garment.

Shoes

Closed-toe, worn-in, with socks you have tested. Sneakers or platform sneakers for most nights; boots for mud or a camping weekend. If you are between two pairs, pick the ones you have walked the most miles in. Blisters start early, and you can’t fix them on a dance floor.

The bag

Fanny pack over crossbody. A long strap swings when you dance and catches on people. Inside: ID, card, phone, earplugs, lip balm, a hair tie, and nothing you would cry about losing. Check the size limit for your event first; the numbers are below, and they differ by organizer.

The layer

Decide before you leave the house where the layer goes when you are hot: around your waist (cropped hoodie), over your arm (cloak), or in the coat check. A layer with no plan ends up on the floor.

The small things that ruin a night

  • Thigh chafing. Sizing up does not fix it. Anti-chafe shorts under a skirt or shorts, or an anti-chafe balm before you leave, does. It gets worse on humid nights.
  • Straps. A bodysuit with proper shoulder straps beats a strapless top or a triangle bra top every time your arms go up. If you love the strapless look, wear a bodysuit underneath it.
  • Toilets in a bodysuit. A one-piece means undressing in a festival toilet. A zip-front cloak or a cropped hoodie over shorts is the quicker option for a camping weekend; a bodysuit is fine for a club with normal bathrooms.
  • Glitter and sunscreen on polyester. Both wash out in cold water; do not tumble-dry a sublimated piece hot. Washed that way, a bodysuit, a pair of joggers, and a cloak cover a year of events between them.
05 / FIT AND SIZES

Rave outfits in sizes XS to 5XL: what fits, and how to measure

These are the size options listed for the jerseys featured in this gallery, checked 10 September 2026. The range varies by design, and a letter size does not tell you how a garment will fit. Compare the product’s measurements before ordering.

How to pick your size in three steps

  1. Open the size guide. Every chart shows garment measurements, taken with the piece laid flat, in inches and centimeters.
  2. Lay a piece you already own and love the fit of flat on the bed, measure it the same way, and match the numbers. This is more reliable than your usual letter size because our cuts aren’t the same as a high-street brand’s.
  3. For a looser fit, compare the next size’s chest width and length with a shirt you already like. Ask us about the specific design if you are between sizes.

Everything is made to order, so size exchanges are limited. Ten minutes with a tape measure before you order saves the whole problem.

Plus-size rave outfits that stay comfortable all night

The baseball jerseys shown here list sizes through 5XL, as do the Zeds Dead oil-slick hockey jersey in look 4 and the GRiZ neon hockey jersey in look 10. The other featured hockey designs list sizes through 4XL; the cropped styles currently stop at XL. Choose the fit from the garment measurements, then pair the jersey with your own preferred shorts or trousers.

More coverage, with jerseys and cargo pants

Try the long-sleeved hockey jersey and cargo pants in look 13, or the tank, open baseball jersey and loose trousers in look 14. Both build the outfit around a print while giving you more coverage. The cropped jersey and high-waisted cargos in look 15 are another option if you prefer covered legs.

06 / THE RULES

Rave dress code: the venue rules that decide your outfit

There is no dress code for how you look. Rules apply to what you carry, what covers your face, and what could be mistaken for a weapon, and they are enforced at the gate. Here are the ones that change an outfit, quoted from the official pages on 9 September 2026. Your event’s page is the final word; read it the week before.

Three things follow from that table. Buy a fanny pack that is 6 x 9 in or smaller and it passes everywhere on this list. Keep your face recognizable if you wear paint or a mask. Leave chains, spikes, and anything weapon-shaped at home, whatever the outfit. For the full list of things that go wrong at the gate and on the floor, read what not to wear to a festival.

07 / YOUR CREW

Matching rave outfits for your crew: custom jerseys with your names on the back

A shared jersey design can tie a crew’s outfits together while everyone chooses their own shorts, trousers and accessories. The Stay Weird hockey jersey in look 5 is one option, listed in XSโ€“4XL. For a crew design of your own, start with the custom jersey page.

On the custom jerseys page, send us your idea, logo, reference image, or just the vibe; every order includes free design support, so you don’t need design skills. You get a full mockup and approve it before you pay anything. There is no minimum order, so one jersey or twelve, and groups get a discount. Sizes vary by style, with selected jerseys up to 5XL so that a mixed crew can wear one design from the smallest to the largest. Everything is made to order, so tell us your festival date when you send the idea, and we will confirm the realistic delivery window before anything is printed.

Ideas that work for women’s crews: the same print as a cropped jersey for some and a full-length jersey for others; each member’s name and number on the back; the crew name on the sleeve. Couples do a two-jersey version; the couples’ guide has four ways to do it.

08 / GOOD TO KNOW

What to wear to a rave: FAQ

What should I wear to my first rave?

Start with a jersey or crop top, comfortable shorts or trousers, worn-in sneakers or boots, a weather-appropriate layer and a small bag that meets your event’s rules. The pastel jersey and cycling shorts in look 8 or the tank, jersey and cargos in look 14 are simple starting points.

Is there a dress code for raves?

No. There is no rule about how much you cover or what style you wear. The rules that exist are about bags, face coverings, props, and age, and the event sets them, not the crowd. Check the rules table above and your event’s own page the week before you go.

Can I wear normal clothes, jeans or gym gear to a rave?

Yes. A familiar tank, cycling shorts, cargos or denim shorts can be the base of your outfit. Choose a pair you have already worn comfortably for a long day, and consider the weather. Add a printed jersey if you want more color.

How revealing does a rave outfit have to be?

Choose the coverage you feel comfortable with. Jerseys, shorts, crops, tanks and loose trousers all appear in this gallery. See look 13 for long sleeves with cargo pants, or look 14 for an open jersey over a tank.

What does a 40-year-old woman wear to a rave?

The same formula, weighted toward comfort: joggers, a cropped hoodie or full-length jersey, worn-in sneakers, and a cloak for the cold. A print does the work, so you do not need to show skin to look like you came for the music. The only age rules at a rave are the 18+ and 21+ checks at the gate; nothing else about age is anyone’s business.

What should I wear to a rave if I’m plus size?

The baseball jerseys in this gallery list sizes through 5XL. The Zeds Dead oil-slick and GRiZ neon oil hockey designs also go to 5XL; other featured hockey jerseys stop at 4XL, and cropped styles at XL. Compare the measurements and build around shorts or trousers you already find comfortable.

What shoes should I wear to a rave? Are heels okay?

Closed-toe sneakers, platform sneakers, or boots that you have already worn for a week. Heels are not worth it: you will stand and dance for hours on a crowded, sticky, or grassy floor, and sore feet end a lot of nights early. Bring a spare pair of socks to a festival.

Do raves get cold at night?

Outdoor ones do, even after a hot day, and the walk from a club at 3 am is cold in most cities. Bring one layer you can carry: a cropped hoodie around your waist or a hooded cloak over your arm. Freaky Deaky’s own safety page tells you to check the forecast and bring an extra layer, and it is right.

Fanny pack or crossbody, and what size is allowed?

Fanny pack. A crossbody strap swings when you dance. Keep it at 6 x 9 in or smaller, and it passes the bag rule at every event in the table above; larger bags are allowed at some events but not others. Multi-pocket bags are refused at Freaky Deaky and Red Rocks, so keep it to one compartment.

How early should I order a custom jersey for a festival?

As soon as you have the date. Custom jerseys are made to order, and we need mockup approval before production starts. Tell us your festival date when you send the idea, and we’ll confirm the realistic delivery window before you pay. If the date is close, say so in the first message.

Build the outfit around
the one print you love.

That is what to wear to a rave: the top that stays put, bottoms you can move in, the shoes you have worn in, one layer with a plan, and a bag that passes the gate. Then choose one print from the gallery and let it carry the outfit. Explore the jersey designs through the product links above or browse the women’s rave outfits collection, with sizes listed on each product page. The shoes, bottoms and accessories shown are styling examples. If your crew wants a design nobody else has, the custom page is the next stop; tell us the festival date, and we will take it from there. Not sure which festival yet? Our list of 15 legendary rave festivals is the map, and the 2026 festival calendar has the dates.
